FAQ

  • Bad breath, or halitosis, is a common condition caused by factors like poor oral hygiene, certain foods, dry mouth, gum disease, and underlying medical conditions. Common triggers include bacteria on the tongue, tobacco use, and dehydration.

    Prevention Tips:

    • Brush teeth and tongue twice daily with fluoride toothpaste.

    • Floss daily and clean dentures thoroughly if applicable.

    • Stay hydrated and avoid skipping meals.

    • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings.

    • Quit smoking and use dentist-recommended mouth rinses.

If bad breath persists, consult your dentist or physician to identify underlying causes and find a solution.

  • To maintain healthy teeth and gums, brush at least twice a day—especially before bedtime—using a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Use gentle, circular motions at a 45-degree angle to clean all tooth surfaces and your tongue. Electric toothbrushes are highly effective as well.

Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between teeth and under the gumline. Use a “C” shape to clean each tooth thoroughly. Floss holders can help if traditional floss is difficult to use.

Additionally, rinse your mouth with water after meals and consult your dentist about appropriate mouth rinses. Regular brushing and flossing, combined with routine dental visits, are essential for preventing plaque buildup and gum disease.

  • Amalgam (silver) fillings have been used for over 100 years and are made of a mix of metals, including mercury. Concerns have been raised about mercury exposure, but studies, along with organizations like the ADA, CDC, FDA, and WHO, confirm that amalgam fillings are safe, durable, and cost-effective. Mercury in fillings becomes inactive when combined with other metals, posing no measurable health risks.

Allergic reactions to silver fillings are extremely rare, with fewer than 100 cases reported by the ADA over decades. Alternative options, such as composite (tooth-colored), porcelain, and gold fillings, are available. Discuss with your dentist to determine the best choice for your needs.

  • You should visit your dentist for an exam and cleaning at least twice a year, though more frequent visits may be recommended based on your needs. Regular check-ups are vital for preventing dental issues and maintaining healthy teeth and gums.

During these visits, your dentist or hygienist will:

    • Review your medical history to assess your overall health.

    • Examine diagnostic x-rays for decay, bone loss, or other issues.

    • Perform oral cancer screenings and evaluate for gum disease.

    • Check for tooth decay, examine existing restorations, and remove tartar and plaque.

    • Polish your teeth to remove stains and provide oral hygiene and dietary recommendations.

Routine dental exams go beyond cavity checks, focusing on comprehensive care to keep your smile healthy.

  • Gum disease often goes unnoticed because it is typically painless in its early stages, with 4 out of 5 people unaware they have it. Regular dental check-ups are crucial for detecting and addressing periodontal problems early.

    What Causes Gum Disease?
Plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, food debris, and saliva, is the primary cause. Left untreated, it produces toxins that inflame gums and destroy bone. Other risk factors include:

    • Smoking or tobacco use

    • Poorly fitting dental appliances or crowded teeth

    • Certain medications that reduce saliva flow

    • Hormonal changes (pregnancy, puberty, or oral contraceptives)

    • Systemic conditions (e.g., diabetes, HIV/AIDS)

    • Genetics, especially with a family history of tooth loss

    Signs of Gum Disease

    • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums

    • Persistent bad breath

    • New spaces between teeth

    • Loose teeth or receding gums

    • Pus around teeth and gums

    • Tenderness or discomfort

Practicing good oral hygiene, maintaining a healthy diet, and scheduling regular dental visits can help prevent and manage gum disease.

  • Brushing alone cannot clean the spaces between your teeth and under the gumline, areas highly prone to cavities and gum disease. Daily flossing removes food particles, plaque, and bacteria from these hard-to-reach areas, preventing damage to your gums, teeth, and bone.

    How Flossing Helps:

    • Disrupts plaque buildup to prevent cavities and gum inflammation.

    • Removes plaque before it hardens into tartar, which can lead to periodontal disease.

    How to Floss Properly:

    1. Use 12–16 inches of floss, leaving 2 inches between your hands.

    2. Gently insert the floss between teeth using a sawing motion.

    3. Curve it into a “C” shape around each tooth and move it up and down.

    4. Consider floss holders if conventional floss is challenging to use.

Daily flossing is essential for maintaining a healthy and beautiful smile!

  • Cosmetic dentistry offers a variety of treatments to enhance your smile, boost your confidence, and improve the overall health of your teeth. Whether you’re looking to fix a single tooth or undergo a full smile makeover, cosmetic procedures can transform your smile.

    Popular Cosmetic Procedures:

    • Teeth Whitening: Lightens stained or discolored teeth.

    • Composite Fillings: Tooth-colored fillings to repair cavities, chips, or gaps.

    • Porcelain Veneers: Thin shells bonded to the front of teeth to improve shape, color, or alignment.

    • Porcelain Crowns: Tooth-colored caps that restore and protect damaged or decayed teeth.

    • Dental Implants: Artificial roots and crowns to replace missing teeth.

    • Orthodontics: Clear aligners or discreet braces to straighten teeth.

Cosmetic dentistry can create a healthier, brighter, and more radiant smile!

  • Porcelain veneers are very thin shells of tooth-shaped porcelain that are individually crafted to cover the fronts of teeth. They are very durable and will not stain, making them a very popular solution for those seeking to restore or enhance the beauty of their smile.

Veneers may be used to restore or correct the following dental conditions:

    • Severely discolored or stained teeth

    • Unwanted or uneven spaces

    • Worn or chipped teeth

    • Slight tooth crowding

    • Misshapen teeth

    • Teeth that are too small or large

Getting veneers usually requires two visits. Veneers are created from an impression (mold) of your teeth that is then sent to a professional dental laboratory where each veneer is custom-made (for shape and color) for your individual smile.

With little or no anesthesia, teeth are prepared by lightly buffing and shaping the front surface of the teeth to allow for the small thickness of veneers. The veneers are carefully fitted and bonded onto the tooth surface with special bonding cements and occasionally a specialized light may be used to harden and set the bond.

Veneers are an excellent dental treatment that can dramatically improve your teeth and give you a natural, beautiful smile.

  • Teeth whitening is a popular and effective solution for brightening your smile. It can address discoloration caused by aging, smoking, coffee, tea, wine, certain medications, or excessive fluoride. While over-the-counter products are available, professional whitening treatments are more effective and safer.

    Teeth Whitening Options:

    • Home Whitening Kits: Custom trays filled with gel to be worn for a few hours a day or overnight. Results may take a few weeks.

    • In-Office Whitening: Quick and immediate results, with treatments done in the dentist's office, sometimes requiring multiple visits.

It's important to have your teeth evaluated by a dentist before starting whitening, especially if you have older restorations or stains from medication. Teeth whitening isn’t permanent, so occasional touch-ups may be needed.

Whitening can provide a brighter, more confident smile!
